Greyline Kennels’ American Pit Bull Terriers

Greyline Kennels has produced some of the greatest American Pit Bull Terriers of all time; with big names like Chain Gang Barney, Tony’s Showtime, Raider II, Notorious Juan Gotty and many more. Their dogs are athletic, with bigger heads, wider chests, and more muscle mass than the average Pit Bull. Greyline was one of the founding kennels of what eventually became the American Bully on the West Coast. They produced arguably one of the most famous American Pit Bull Terriers of all time, Notorious Juan Gotty. Juan Gotty owned by Richard Barajas, is one of the dogs that is most often credited with starting American Bully movement on the West Coast. Barajas bought Gotty from Greyline and created his own legacy with the Gottiline name. Greyline has always had some of best looking American Pit Bull Terriers around; that is why their dogs played such a big role in the creation of the American Bully breed.

We got an exclusive interview with Gary “Doc” Moore of Greyline Kennels for this article. Gary is now one of the few still breeding American Pit Bull Terriers of this type. He is continuing the Greyline name and keeping it relevant. “Doc” says he has some big plans in the near future for Greyline Kennels. One of those he says, is producing a litter using Monster Jojola’s frozen seed. Gary tells us “I am going to clone Monster.” Monster Jojola was very well known in the Bully community and was produced by Richard Barajas of Westside Kennels; using Notorious Juan Gotty and Castle King’s Ebony. Monster Jojola was a fawn and white American Pit Bull Terrier and can be found in the pedigrees of many of the top American Bully lines.

Gary Moore was born in Texas, but his family moved to Los Angeles, California when he was very young. There he made friends with Phillip and Ding; who raised Pit Bulls. He saw the dogs in their yard and asked what they were. His friend told him they were Pit Bulls. Gary was really impressed with the way his dogs looked. Since he liked them so much, his friend decided to give him a puppy to take home with him that night. He started breeding Pit Bulls in the 6th grade in his home town of Compton. He continued this up until he left for the Navy.

When Gary decided to pursue a career in the Navy at 19, his brother Tony continued the family breeding business in Los Angeles. Their dad suggested that they start buying UKC papered dogs; to take their kennel to the next level. Tony started searching and eventually found what he was looking for. One of the first UKC dogs Tony bought was Tony’s Showtime. Showtime was heavy on Ruffian bloodlines. She was strong, athletic, and nice-looking. Gary says that she could jump a 6’ fence with ease. She was the founding female for what became Greyline. Showtime was also mother to the infamous Raider II of Greyline Kennels. Raider II went on to sire some of the top dogs on the West Coast.

Tony eventually teamed up with Oliver De La Cruz among others, to started creating the look that he had in mind for their kennel. When Gary Moore went on shore duty in Misawa, Japan, he bought the very first official Greyline dog; he named him Moore’s Blue Dallas. The Moore family continued to develop the look of their dogs. Some of the lines they used to create the classic Greyline look were from Colby, Ruffian, Castillo, De la Cruz, and Westbrook’s Do Good Pit Bulls.

Greyline Kennels had created a unique appearance. Their American Pit Bull Terriers have massive heads, thick necks, and broad chests; while staying true to the athleticism of this breed. They can definitely run, jump, climb, and work. Greyline dogs have a lot of drive, but still have the temperament of a family dog. The look they created eventually became known as a “Bully” style Pit Bull; which were the type of dogs used in the creation of the American Bully breed. If you look far enough back in the pedigree of any quality American Bully, you will find Greyline on the West Coast and Razor’s Edge on the East Coast. Most American Bully Pedigrees today will probably have both; or the lines that descended from these like Gottiline and Daxline from Greyline heritage or Remyline from Razor’s Edge lineage. There are many other lines that descend from Greyline and Razor’s Edge, but too many to list for this article. You can see some additional pictures of Greyline descendants down below.
